Scoliosis causes the spine to curve to one side. In few cases, scoliosis may be corrected through bracing or surgery.

Spine problems are more dominant in the elderly. The more common of these are related to degenerative changes affecting the discs and other structures. Factors that lead to disc degeneration include the inevitable drying that comes with age, which decreases the disc's ability to absorb shock. Lumbar surgery or decompression is a common surgical procedure used to alleviate the lower back pain caused by pinched nerves.

Lumbar interbody fusion is a type of spinal fusion that involves removing the intervertebral disk. This type of fusion is performed using different approaches like accessing the spine through incisions in the lower back or through incisions in the side.

These are minimally invasive procedures to treat vertebral body compression fractures, which means small breaks in the vertebral body.
