Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG)

What is minimally invasive CABG?

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery is a surgical procedure used to facilitate normal blood flow for those suffering from coronaryartery disease. A blood vessel from some other part of the body is taken as a graft and thenattached to the area above and below the problematic artery bypassing the blockage.CABG is a major procedure which is most often performed through an open-heart surgery. But for faster recovery and minimal surgical trauma on the body, the highly specialised team of surgeons at Kauvery Hospital offers you an alternative, minimally invasive surgical option.

In this procedure, the surgeon accesses the heart through small incisions made between the ribs to perform the surgery without having to cut open the ribs. In most cases, this surgical method does not require for the patient’s heart to be stopped during the surgery and thus there is no need for the patient to be put on a heart-lung bypass machine. The blood vessels commonly used for grafting are harvested either from the saphenous vein or the radial artery. The harvesting procedure is done endoscopically with great results and minimal scarring for patient satisfaction.

Saphenous Vein Harvesting for CABG

The surgeon will make several cuts around the knee through which an endoscope and other surgical tools are inserted into the leg to cut the required portion of the vein which is then used to bypass the blockage in the artery.

Radial Artery Harvesting for CABG

Radial arteries are considered a better alternative to saphenous vein grafts for CABG for better results and long term effectiveness. In this procedure, a graft is harvested from the forearm of the non dominant hand from which is then used to bypass the blockage.

When is it performed?

CABG is performed for high-risk patients who suffer from advanced coronary artery diseases. The severe narrowing of the blood vessel or multiple blood vessels bringing blood to the heart muscles will put the heart under distress due to the lack of supply of oxygen, increasing the probability of a cardiac arrest. CABG is performed for these patients to ensure that the blood supply to the heart remains easy and smooth. The surgery is also required for patients whose blockage can’t be treated by angioplasty or stenting or for those who have undergone these procedures but failed to be effective long term. CABG is sometimes performed as a treatment for cardiac arrest as well. For vulnerable and high risk patients and age groups, minimally invasive CABG offers a much safer alternative than a traditional open-heart surgery.

What are the benefits?

  • Lower risk
  • Lesser pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal chances of infection and bleeding
  • Minimal scarring
  • Shortened hospital stay
  • Lower probability of complications like arterial fibrillation—irregular heartbeats—and strokes
