Minimally Invasive Excision of Cardiac Tumors

What is minimally invasive excision of cardiac tumors?

A cardiac tumor is an abnormal growth that develops in the heart. These tumors could be either benign—non cancerous tumors that stay in the primary location without spreading to other areas—or malignant, cancerous tumors. Minimally Invasive Excision of Cradiac Tumors is a surgical treatment prescribed for tumors of the heart that are benign in nature. In this procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions on the body through which specialized tools are inserted to access the heart and perform the surgery.

When is it performed?

This surgery is prescribed only for benign tumors like myxomas. A myxoma is a cardiac tumor which originated from the heart itself. Cardiac myxomas are usually found in the upper chambers of the heart, the right and left atria. Even so, a vast majority of them are usually found in the left atrium. To avoid future complications like clot formation and metastasizing, the surgery is performed. Left Atrial Myxoma Excisions, also called LA Excision, is the most common myxoma surgery.
